Supercar detailing is an art form, a meticulous ritual performed by those who understand that every microscopic imperfection is a personal insult to the engineering gods.
Detailing a car isn’t just routine upkeep – it’s a labour of love and a statement of pride in ownership. But when it comes to supercars, extra care is essential, as their paintwork and finishes are often bespoke.
With spring almost upon us, and the SCC season officially started, you’ll want your car looking as flawless as the day it rolled off the production line. Here’s our quick guide to washing your car:
Use the right products
Before you even start, invest in the right supercar cleaning products.
Most high-performance car manufacturers sell their own range of supercar detailing, cleaning and car care products, so start off on the right foot.
At SCC, we work with world leaders Gtechniq, who offer a comprehensive range of products designed to enhance and protect your supercar at every stage of the detailing process.
After all, you wouldn’t wash a diamond with washing-up liquid, so why would you think about slapping generic car shampoo onto a Lamborghini’s paintwork!
Start with the right wash
The two-bucket method is your non-negotiable starting point – one bucket for clean, soapy water, the other for rinsing out your wash mitt.
Use a pH-neutral car shampoo specifically designed for high-end finishes, and rinse thoroughly.
After washing, carefully pat your car dry with microfibre towels. Use separate towels for different sections to prevent cross-contamination and keep the finish flawless.
And if you drop a towel while drying off, get a fresh one. A supercar’s paint is often softer than your typical runabouts, and the last thing you want is to be the proud owner of a very expensive exfoliated bonnet.

Decontamination: Clay bars and fallout removers
Even if your car looks clean, the real grime is lurking below the surface. Road tar, brake dust, and industrial fallout embed themselves in the paint like unwelcome guests. Enter the clay bar – your secret weapon against hidden contaminants.
Lubricate the surface and gently glide the clay across the bodywork. If done right, your car’s paint should feel as smooth as a silk pillowcase. Follow this up with an iron fallout remover to dissolve those stubborn metallic particles that refuse to budge.
Paint correction: Banishing swirl marks and scratches
Supercars don’t do “good enough.” If you’ve ever cringed at swirl marks under direct sunlight, it’s time for paint correction. This is where detailing becomes part science, part wizardry.
Using a dual-action polisher (or leaving it to a professional if you’re prone to heavy hands), apply a cutting compound to remove minor scratches and imperfections. Then, refine the finish with a softer polish. The result? A deep, mirror-like gloss that makes mere mortals weep with envy.
Ceramic coatings: The ultimate shield
Waxing is fine if you like a bit of weekend graft, but for long-term protection, a ceramic coating is the smart choice. This liquid polymer bonds with the paintwork to create a hydrophobic surface, repelling water, dirt, and even some light scratches.
Application requires patience and precision – wipe on, buff off, and let it cure under controlled conditions. Once done, your supercar won’t just shine; it’ll practically glow.
Wheels and tyres: More than just rubber and rims
Your wheels endure a beating from brake dust, road grime, and, let’s be honest, the occasional high-speed sprint. Use a dedicated alloy wheel cleaner and soft brushes to get into every intricate spoke.
For the tyres, a high-quality dressing is essential. A slick, satin finish says ‘meticulously maintained’ rather than ‘greasy used car’.

Interior detailing: Because the inside matters too
A supercar’s cabin is a masterpiece of Alcantara, carbon fibre, and hand-stitched leather. Keep it in peak condition with the right products: pH-neutral leather cleaner, anti-static dash protectant, and a vacuum with a soft brush attachment for those hard-to-reach nooks.
Final touches: Glass, trim, and the little details
Smears on the windscreen? Unacceptable. Use a streak-free glass cleaner for that factory-fresh clarity. Rubber seals? Treat them with a conditioner to prevent drying and cracking. Exhaust tips? Polish them up so they gleam like freshly minted currency.
And if you really want to level up, invest in a professional-grade detailing light to spot any missed imperfections. Because true perfection isn’t a destination; it’s a relentless pursuit.
The verdict
Supercar detailing isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s a declaration of respect for the machine. A showroom-ready finish takes time, effort, and a borderline obsessive attention to detail. But when you see the way the sunlight dances off that flawless paintwork, it’s all worth it.
Now, go forth and detail. Just don’t let it sit in the rain when you’re done. That would be tragic.
