There are many reasons one would want to buy a supercar. It could be fulfilling a childhood dream, realising a passion for adrenalin and speed, or even perhaps wanting to celebrate success by splashing out on a statement. Maybe it’s simply the admiration of the art, the brand, the sound.

The term Supercar was coined back in 1966, with the Italian Lamborghini Miura; the world’s first ever Supercar. Almost 60 years later, there are countless supercars, hypercars and even megacars designed, crafted and sold around the world. Brands we all know and love; Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Pagani all sit alongside newer disruptors, all creating machines that are faster, sharper and more advanced than ever before. Each one is a celebration of their engineering and artistry, designed not only to be admired, but to be experienced.

Since the Miura, the world of supercars has constantly evolved, with each brand constantly competing for titles, statistics, and admiration. The 1980s gave us turbocharged legends like the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959, both rewriting what was technically possible for a road-car. The 1990s saw McLaren’s F1 set a new benchmark as the fastest production car in the world, and holding this for over a decade, until overthrown by the Bugatti Veyron in the 2000s. Today, the landscape is shifting again, with hybrid and electric hypercars such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and Lotus Evija, showing that sustainability and extreme performance can co-exist.

Each decade has raised the bar in speed, technology and design, ensuring that supercars remain at the very forefront of automotive innovation, built for the driver.

With motor shows such as Goodwood Festival of Speed and Salon Privé in the UK, we’re not shy of coming together to share our admiration for these incredible machines. Most recently, Koenigsegg unleashed the Sadair’s Spear. Ferrari have given us the F80. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage; the UK’s first ever supercar. There is an endless list of classic, modern and ear-piercing supercars, and the demand to drive and experience them has never been so exciting.

Despite the engineering, the passion, and the pure sound, distinct to each manufacturer, more supercars than ever before are hidden away from the open road. Could it be to protect them and avoid maintenance costs, to stall milage, to maintain value – or do owners simply not have the time to take these beautiful machines for a drive?

According to motoringresearch.co.uk, there are only 23,300 supercars registered in the UK as of June 2024. Whilst a 4% increase on the previous year, this is a miniscule number compared to the almost 70 million people living within the UK; owning a supercar is clearly positioning you within the 1%, and whilst not everyone may understand your purchase, these cars deserve to be driven, and owners just like you, deserve to experience the exhilarating roar of the engine on the open road.
